Mumbai's PSA Becomes India's First Box Terminal to Run Completely on Renewable Energy

Mumbai’s PSA Becomes India’s First Box Terminal to Run Completely on Renewable Energy
PSA Mumbai has become India’s first container terminal fully powered by renewable energy, marking a significant milestone in its eco-friendly initiatives. The terminal, in collaboration with O2 Power, commissioned a 7.8MW solar farm, set to expand to 10MW by 2024. The farm is predicted to meet more than 75% of PSA Mumbai’s energy needs, with the balance coming from MSEDCL and other providers.

The solar farm, situated in Beed and soon Motala in Maharashtra, will curtail the terminal’s CO2 equivalent emissions by an estimated 16,000 tonnes annually. PSA Mumbai is also focussing on other initiatives such as electrifying its equipment fleet and the launch of e-trucks in 2024. O2 Power, a distinguished renewable energy platform in India, leads the solar farm development and will manage its operations.

Renewable Energy Powers India’s First Container Terminal in PSA Mumbai

Constructed in partnership with O2 Power, a 7.8MW solar farm has turned PSA Mumbai into the first fully renewable energy-powered container terminal in India. This remarkable milestone underscores the terminal’s intention to lower emissions levels. By June 2024, the solar farm’s capacity is planned to increase to 10MW, which will cater to over 75% of the terminal’s power requirements. Partnering with Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) and other suppliers will cover the rest of the renewable power needs.

Significant environmental benefits are expected from the operation of the solar farm. Its anticipated contribution is an annual reduction of 16,000 tons in CO2 equivalent emissions from the terminal. This translates into a significant reduction of over 350,000 tonnes across the solar farm’s operational lifespan.

In addition, O2 Power will manage the further development of the solar farm located in Beed, Maharashtra. The firm, which is a major renewable energy platform owned by EQT Infrastructure and Temasek, will carry out the operations with extension facilities at Motala, Maharashtra. These facilities will be integrated effortlessly with the operations through existing MSEDCL infrastructure.

PSA Mumbai’s Green Commitments and Collaboration with Partners

“We are thrilled to inaugurate our solar farm and significantly reduce our emissions by switching to 100% renewable power,” stated Andy Lane, CEO of PSA Mumbai. He also highlighted the company’s determination to meet the needs of supply chain users wanting to achieve emission reduction targets with greener and more sustainable transport solutions.

PSA Mumbai strives to slash its carbon emissions by 50% by 2030; its roadmap to this aim includes key initiatives such as broad electrification of its equipment fleet. The deployment of a complete fleet of electric Rubber-tyred Gantry Cranes (RTGC) for Phase 2 development is a part of this initiative. Additionally, the electrification of all existing RTGCs in Phase 1 is underway and projected to be completed by 2027.

By early 2024, PSA BDP intends to introduce e-trucks, contributing to the creation of a zero-emission green transport corridor in Nhava Sheva connecting terminals, container freight stations, and customer facilities. This revolutionary initiative champions PSA’s unwavering commitment to green transportation by merging the renewable power generated by PSA Mumbai with the trucking expertise of its Indian partners.

Kiran Kumar, head of Open Access O2 Power, expressed his satisfaction with the partnership, saying, “Our interaction with the PSA Mumbai team over the last few months has been so invigorating. We’re proud to partner with the PSA group and look forward to continued collaboration with PSA Mumbai for their overall sustainability initiatives.”
